Wetlands along the Owasco Inlet
Owasco is a fun little lake with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. On a windy day you can explore the inlet instead of paddling on the lake. To get to the put-in at the south end of the lake, drive to Southshore Marina and take the little dirt road at the back of the parking lot. You will end up at a small parking lot near where the inlet meets the lake...

 | We first headed right from the launch site, up the Owasco Inlet. While the Seneca and Cayuga inlets are very developed (urban kayaking) and are quite dirty, the Owasco inlet begins with a wetlands area (LOTS of birds and other critters) and continues with a wide, serene channel that winds back for many miles into the woods. There’s also a (somewhat mucky) hiking trail that goes from the put-in back along the channels. Even though it was a bit windy, we paddled a large portion of the lake. We found many small creeks to explore along the way (photo on left). |
